CHARACTER NAME: Lord Celeborn
SERIES: Lord of the Rings : Fellowship of the Rings
CANON POINT: When the Fellowship first arrives to Lothlórien
LOSS: All memories of Celebrian, his daughter, will be lost as payment. This will greatly effect Celeborn as time passes, especially since he fiercely loved his daughter with all his heart. He won't remember her adoring smile or sweet voice, which will drive him somewhat mad since Celeborn will know he's missing a part of his memories.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
Known as the regal and handsome husband of Lady Galadriel of Lothlórien, Lord Celeborn is described as an Elf whose infinite wisdom outshines all. His origins state that he's the prince of the Elven Kingdom of Doriath, home of his kinsman King Thingol. Like most of his clan, Celeborn is one of the Sindarin Elves who refused to embark upon the Great Journey towards the Undying Lands. While Doriath professed neutrality in the strife that brewed amongst their kind, their allegiance would fall with none other than Lady Galadriel herself once she arrives at Doriath’s doorstep.
In search of the Silmarils that was stolen by the fiendish Morgoth, Galadriel and Celeborn meet in Doriath and eventually fall in love. The two soon wed and sought shelter outside of his homeland within the Region of Beleriand. For the remainder of the First Age, Celeborn and his new wife remained in Beleriand and enjoyed the comforts of a peaceful life free from the conflicts that would soon brew. Some text state that the newlyweds crossed over the Blue Mountains into the kingdom of Eriador but such events are untrue.
While it’s truly uncertain how long they stayed in Beleriand, eventually Celeborn and Galadriel took their leave from there once Thingol, King of Doriath, was slain by the Dwarves. It was then that Celeborn’s distrust for Dwarven kind began to take root once the Dwarves sacked the kingdom in search of the highly coveted Slimarlis jewels. Fighting a war that could not be won, Celeborn escaped and took his wife to seek comfort away from both his fallen homeland and Beleriand that would later sink into the bottom of the sea. The First Age ended with much blood shed following the destruction of Beleriand and the death of King Thingol. Many of the Ñoldor returned to the Undying Lands, all except for Galadriel who chose to stay behind upon Middle-earth with Celeborn.
Despite all the hardships and violence they seen, this young couple vowed to overcome it all for the sake of love. Morgoth’s defeat rang hallow within Celeborn’s ears for he cared not of the events that transpired after the death of his kinsman. Instead, Celeborn opted for seclusion from the chaos within the lands of Lindon alongside his beloved wife. It was King Gil-galad, the High King of the Ñoldor and King of Lindon who welcomed the young couple to his land. However, Galadriel soon urged her husband to move their family to Eriador with the Elves in their following. There they lived in relative peace until an Age of Chaos could descend upon them again. The birth of their daughter, Celebrian, brought Celeborn much joy as he welcomed this new bundle of joy into his life with much glee. All thoughts of the war-torn past they survived seemed nearly behind them until Galadriel began to sense a great evil growing in Middle-earth. Feeling the need to oppose such wickedness, Galadriel and Celeborn both felt the need to lend their aid.
The Rise of Sauron brought about an unlikely alliance amongst Men and Elves in order to defeat the evil Lord of Mordor. While it’s uncertain whether or not Celeborn fought during the War of the Last Alliance, it is suspected that he did given his close ties to King Gil-galad and the young Lord Elrond of Rivendell. *Joining forces with the Dúnedain King Elenedil, Gil-galad and his forces were crushed by Sauron during the fray, both slaughtered by none other than the Dark Lord himself. While all hope seemed lost, it would be none other than Isildur, King Elenedil’s son, who would slice the One Ring from Sauron’s fingers and unfortunately claim its malevolent power for himself. This victory against the Dark Lord was ultimately a defeat for all of Arda. With the One Ring now in the possession of mortal hands, evil would forever take root in the land until the Ring of Power is destroyed. With such a truth known to Celeborn, he, like so many of his brethren, began to see Men as weak and petty. Islidur had a chance to cast the ring within the Fires of Mount Doom but succumbed to the allure of power towards the very end. This decision is what sparked such a schism amongst Men and Elves, leading to Celeborn and Galadriel’s solitude to Lothlórien.
Sometime during the war, Elrond married Celeborn's daughter when Celebrian came of age and the two gave him three grandchildren in the form of the twin brothers Elladan and Elrohir, and the last child being none other than Arwen Undómiel, the future Queen of Gondor. Much of the unrest from the Second Age began to settle at the approach of the Third Age, but not very long after the start of this age, Celebrian was ambushed and attacked by Orcs. While she was rescued by her young sons, the brutalization she suffered ruined her and thus Celebrian requested to take her leave of Middle-earth. These were dark times for Celeborn and his family for his dear daughter couldn't find happiness anymore in the home they've chosen. Internally like any parent would, Celeborn blamed himself for the wicked deeds that befallen upon his daughter. He believed that if he had sailed to the Undying Lands beside Galadriel before, then his dear child wouldn't have suffered the way she did. While of course he quickly dispelled such morbid thoughts with his wife, Celeborn held that guilt for years to come. He started of the Third Age with a heavy heart and soon that great evil that plagued them once before would rise again.
Known primarily for his vast wisdom and unbridled regal grace; Lord Celeborn is a stately Elf who prides himself in knowing and understanding how the world works. He sometimes comes across as cold and frigid along with the rest of his kind but Celeborn isn’t frigid as he seems. While he’s certainly quite stoic and isn’t easily swayed or moved by emotions, Celeborn possesses a certain flair about him that commands the respect of others. He’s an ancient Elf, almost nothing surprises him and he’s able to keep his demeanor calm and focused even in the direst of situations. When he was the Prince of Doriath, Celeborn did once possess a bit more pep in his step but his long years on Middle-earth eased his rebelliousness into tempered grace. Liken to fine wine, Celeborn aged gracefully over the years both physically and mentally. While he certainly isn’t perfect in anyway, Celeborn knows how to inspire when to inspire others with his wisdom but also knows how to listen. He doesn’t say much and doesn’t feel the need to do so. If spoken to, he’ll speak but typically he holds to his silence as he quietly passes judgment on others.
Likened to most Elves, Celeborn does possess a level of arrogance that would completely infuriate anyone who isn’t of Elvenkind. He looks down upon the Dwarves for their terrible deeds done against his kin during the First Age, and frowns at the humans for their weakness. While he doesn’t particularly hate either race, Celeborn certainly doesn’t value their company much. He holds much distrust for the Dwarves and Men, believing them both to be petty and selfish. He views them with a disdain that most Elves have, but yet he doesn’t go out of his way to persecute them for their faults. His dislike for them is subtle at best, shown best in his stern words rather than in his actions.
Another flaw that Celeborn has lies solely on his quiet nature. While he’s only socializes when necessary, finding his solace to be a blessing above all things else. He of course favors books over conversation and will often go out of his way to avoid others. Unless he has pressing matters to attend to, this seemingly aloof Elven Lord will not squander his time pursuing idle chatter with anyone without due reason. This may not sit well with most since his haughty nature showcases the superiority complex that the Elves are infamous for. While he is a good leader and a very wise individual, not even Celeborn can shake himself out of these bad habits.
While Celeborn is indeed a very wise and worldly individual, he tends to view himself with an unspoken level of humility that may surprise many. He does possess the stereotypical "Elven Pride" that is associated with his kind, but at first glance Celeborn doesn't seem to celebrate his royal heritage. He's very low-key in that aspect, unlike his wife who sometimes dons rich fabrics to further enhance her ethereal golden beauty. Much like Telperion, the Silver Tree of Valinor, Celeborn possesses a rather subdued and earthly appearance unblemished by needless bits of wealth. It's not that he views himself as unworthy of such goods, but rather feels as if he has no need for them. The same goes in accordance with the praise he receives as the "Wisest of them All". Celeborn feels that he's not as wise as many people believe him to be and tends to shy away from compliments with a reserved smile or nod. In his belief, if one is truly wise then they don't need others to praise them for being wise. While he does demand acknowledgement, Celeborn doesn't crave praise.
What motivated Celeborn throughout the Ages was his people's need for leadership during such dark and dreary times. He always believed since his youth that his title alone doesn't make him a "prince", but rather his deeds. He gone out of his way to assist those of his Elvenkind, sometimes nearly sacrificing himself in the pursuit of peace. Celeborn is as devoted as his wife when it comes down to the welfare of Middle-earth but he's just as weary as any other battle worn soldier. While his motivations soon shift and become more focused upon his people once more than than Arda as a whole, Celeborn and his wife still cared enough to assist the Fellowship.
ABILITIES: While Celeborn is hardly as mystical as his dearest Galadriel, the Prince of Doriath possesses a wisdom that is nearly unmatched by all. He's quite perceptive, showing a keenness of insight that is seldom possible for most beings. To some, Celeborn's perceptive nature might seem to be borderline witchcraft at best, some even daring to compare his perceptiveness to Galadriel's mind-reading. However, Celeborn doesn't possess such talents and simply has an uncanny knack for reading people and their intentions bizarrely well. This doesn't mean that he's without flaws when it comes to his assessment
Besides his wisdom, Celeborn happens to be fiercely good with a blade like most of his kind. While its been eons if not, centuries, since Celeborn last did battle, the Lord of Lothlorien isn't easily defeated. The Ancient Elf had years to hone his skills and countless wars to showcase them. While he won't fight without dire need, Celeborn is a warrior with skills that may bewilder his foes. All Elves are known for their somewhat supernatural strength and enhanced speed. While they aren't strong enough to lift impossibly heavy objects, Elves are powerful enough to take down five or six average human men with little stress. In accordance with this truth, Elves do possess far better hearing and eyesight than a normal man making them foes to be reckoned with.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
The soundless approach of Laer changed the leaves of nearby trees from vibrant greens to rusty bronze as the days grew colder with every hour. A soft sigh escaped the lips of his fair daughter, a young elfling bound from head to toe in a thick blanket spun out of dark velvet. Her sighing won attention of the dutiful father who held her within his arms. Choosing to go out for a stroll upon this chilly autumn day, Celeborn held his precious daughter close to his heart as he gazed up at the changing leaves. Autumn was always his favorite time of the year. He adored the colors that Autumn makes, loving how the reds and golds mesh together to form canvas of colors along the high branches above. While his sleepy daughter, who couldn't have been no older than a few months now, doesn't seem to appreciate such a wondrous sight; Celeborn couldn't help but smile faintly as he strolled along the path.
Vowing not to stray too far into the forest with his dearest in his arms, Celeborn soon found himself standing at the fork of the road. "Hm?" A curious hum floated from his lips as he stared at the two paths. The path towards the right was covered in majestic bronze leaves, each seemingly placed purposely by Autumn itself. The road that lead towards the left seemed to travel down a hill. It was scarcely covered with reddish-brown leaves and seemed quite dusty. While Celeborn knew that either road wouldn't lead him too far away from Lindon, the wise Elf couldn't help but perplexed as to what road to take. There's an old saying that the greatest journey always begins with a single step. Celeborn wasn't quite certain which path to take but he chosen the left road over the right.
"Simply because it seems like a more difficult path--" He whispered to his sleepy daughter. "Doesn't mean it cannot be conquered." Knowing that Celebrian couldn't quite understand his words as of yet, Celeborn placed a soft kiss on her chubby cheek as he continued down the hilly road.

INTENT: I wish to play this character out of sheer challenge. I want to see if I can capture Celeborn's majestic flair with my writing and breathe life into a character that most Tolkien fans don't quite pay attention to.
